From Dirt to Dagger In ancient times it was absolutely necessary to convert iron ore into metal if one wanted a steel or iron tool or blade. The only alternative was to have deep pockets and buy one. The process was secret and coveted. These facts have been brought out by an ancient letter, currently in a British Museum, from an Egyptian Pharaoh to a Hittite King requesting an iron Dagger. Today most smiths can order any grade of steel, iron or alloy they wish. They can go to any scrap yard and get, literally, tons of most grades of steel. There are, however, a small number of purists who desire to have every bit of knowledge concerning steel, iron, and blade making beginning with just ore and ending up with a finished product. You can refer to the September / October 2005 issues of Blade Magazine in which I give the process for making Tama Hagane, the steel used in the manufacture of traditional Japanese swords and Knives. The manufacture of Tama Hagane is a long process that is very cost ineffective and not conducive to most small shop applications. This being the case, I have developed a process that is efficient both economically and environmentally. The micro bloom process will fit into the time constraints and facility constraints of any contemporary bladesmith or blacksmith. This exhaustive program is a four day study. You may take all four classes together or you may break them into four non consecutive days. You may also choose to take a single day study to facilitate individual requirements or financial priorities.
